Duane is listening to some messages by T.D. Jakes right now while I type out this letter, then I'll read to him. Hopefully when we get to the church later I can connect and get this sent off to you.

We got a phone call from a man in Switzerland early one morning. His wife had found Stephi's camera somewhere in Australia. (Yeah for Mom who puts address stickers with phone numbers on things! And thank God for watching over it and inspiring honest helpful people to find it!) We gave him Stephi's Australia phone number and they got her camera back to her.

Sunday morning Duane is going to finish this very helpful teaching on the subject of favor. (Well, I don't know if any subject from God's word is ever "finished". The more we learn, the more we see there is yet to learn!) In the evening he has some more to share with us on "Things the Devil CAN'T do". It's going to be a great day to get equipped to grow!

We love you and pray the last two verses of Jude for you; "Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy...be glory...forever!"

Yours truly,

Pastor Duane and Jeanie

Blended Families

From the Res Life Life Group booklet:

If you are blending two families, come see what God has for you. (If you want to get it, you can sign up here.) Here’s their latest email:

Pretty funny picture, I thought. Duane was cooperative, but a bit mortified at the thought of me putting this picture in the letter. When in Korea we visited the museum and King’s Palace and they dressed us up as king and queen and took a picture.

It’s so nice to be sitting at home typing this letter. Last week was a flurry of catching up. But we took a half hour here and there to play (some people call it “work”) in the yard and garden. And this week with Daniel’s help finished all the pruning and cleanup of flower gardens and orchard –only the raspberries are left to thin, trim and tie back.

This week we were in St Louis, and then Ludington, Michigan on Wednesday night. We spent the night in Traverse City to be there for a couple appointments this morning. I thought I’d quick write the letter first thing before leaving the hotel, but Duane came back to the room after a morning swim and workout and said to be ready in 10 minutes. What is it about 10 minutes? It seems I often hear, “Be ready in 10!” or “Can you be ready in 10?” or “If you can leave in 10 minutes…” I’m learning there’s a lot I can get done in 10 minutes when I have to; there’s a lot I have to leave undone with just 10 minutes; and there’s an awful lot of important things I can forget to remember in 10 minutes. Aaah, the adventures of living life in 10 minute spurts.

Oops, I’m chattering and I wanted to tell you a bit more about our trip to Korea.

At a lunch buffet I tried jelly fish! It tastes like you’d expect. Well, maybe worse—kind of like chewing on clear plastic spaghetti noodles. They do have delicious food and incredible green tea!!

Duane has some goodies to share with us this Sunday on FAVOR. As background, I’ve been in large churches most of my Christian life. Not really because I like largeness itself, it’s just that I’ve tried several small churches and haven’t liked them as well. Here are the reasons I like large churches:

1. Preaching – The Press did get this one right. I’ve never seen a large church with bad preaching. It’s not that all small church preachers are bad (I’ve seen many who are excellent), but some are not that great (hence, they stay small). When was the last time you heard, “That church with 10,000 members has the worst preaching”? Never.

2. Music, Part 1 – When you have 1,000 to 10,000 people in church, it’s easier to find great musicians – and lots of them – than it is in a church of 50 people. I’ve lived in Nashville, Tennessee and worked in the Christian music industry for five years, and I can testify that Res Life’s current music ministry is as good as any “professional” ministry out there now. Plus, there’s nothing like 2,000 people praising God in unison.

3. Music, Part 2 – I love having worship leaders who write their own songs. When I first attended Res, I didn’t like it because they were all new songs to me. But it didn’t take long until I loved singing songs written by Ken or Michael. They just seem so personal to us – to what’s going on at our church – not just a song that a million other churches are singing every Sunday. I haven’t been to many small churches that have ministers that write their own (good) songs.

4. Many Ministries – Large churches have lots of ministry choices. This is great in two ways: 1) when you want to serve, you can pick from a large selection of ministries, knowing you’ll be in an area where your skills are used and one in which you’re interested and 2) when you need help, even in a way that’s not usual, it’s likely that a large church has a ministry to help you.

5. Community Impact – Isn’t it great to hear the numbers each month – 400, 500, 600 people saved because of the ministry of Res? This is the type of community impact I want to be part of.

6. World Impact – Large churches have the resources to reach beyond their city. That’s one reason I support Walking by Faith – it impacts the world. I haven’t yet seen a small church with a TV ministry.

7. Staff – I’m not sure how many people know all the pastors and staff at Res, but I know several of them, and can honestly say that they are excellent. Many of the pastors could be pasturing their own large churches and several staff members would be big successes in non-ministry jobs in the “real world” if they weren’t serving in ministry.

8. Bookstore – I like having a resource like a good-sized bookstore within the church. Not only is it a great resource for teaching tapes and CDs (which I use quite frequently), but the store makes it easy to pick up a great book immediately when the speaker mentions it in his sermon.

9. It's what heaven will be like – Don’t you know that there will be a crowd in heaven? Billions of people worshipping Christ. A large church is a glimpse of that here on earth.

10. You don't feel singled out – What the GR Press listed as a negative (“you get lost in the crowd”) is a benefit for me. When I first became a Christian, I felt more comfortable in a place where I was one of 1,500 people and no one knew that I was new rather than being one of 50 people where 25 of them were swarming over the new visitor. Because of this, I think a large church makes it less intimidating for visitors and seekers. I do grant that a large church does lend itself to letting people just “float on by”, drifting along with little commitment and not connecting with others, but for those interested in doing so, it’s easy to develop personal relationships with others through ministry and small gatherings.

11. (Bonus) Guest Speakers – At a large church, you get guest speakers like Jimmy Evans, Rick Renner, Steve Hage, and on and on. It’s great to see and hear these people on a regular basis and have them as part of the Res family.

I’d like to end by saying that I’m not anti-small church. Small churches have their own benefits (you know everyone, you can have the pastor over for dinner, you can head your own ministry, and so on), and many people prefer them to larger churches. My point here is that there are great benefits in being part of churches of all sizes – large churches included. Maybe next time the GR Press can point this out.

Res Life Leadership Conference Tapes a Must Listen

Just got done listening to the Res Life Leadership Conference that took place in January. It’s a 10 CD series and includes some great teachings. I’d recommend it to anyone, but those in ministry (professional or lay ministry) will really appreciate it. It will be $50 well spent.

I’ve talked to a couple people who’ve heard these as well, so the comments below are mine alone – not reflective of everyone by any means, but here’s my honest opinion of what I thought of the presenters:

Pastor Duane Vander Klok – Excellent in all the presentations. His CD about church finances is especially good. It’s one I’ll keep in my library and listen to every now and then.

Jimmy Evans – Just as good. I love Jimmy’s teachings – he’s so “on message” and bold in his teaching. And he’s funny too. Be sure to listen to the CD where he and Pastor DVK are answering questions from the audience. Jeanie has a few good answers on that one too.

Casey Treat – I’ll give him a “good”, but he wasn’t my favorite. Some others who heard him thought he was the best. Maybe it was just me. Maybe it was the topics. Maybe it was because I listened to it while I was pounding out 25 miles on the exercise bike. :-)

Darrell Hines – Good, I liked him a lot. Not as good as the first two, but very solid. I especially identified with him as he told about his roots in the COGIC. My best friend in college, who’s now a COGIC pastor, lived the same life Bishop Hines described. It was like going back to college for me. And now I know why Sam spent all day every Sunday at church. :-)

Jeanie Vander Klok – No rating – the seminar wasn’t for me. It was for spouses of pastors (at least the first 15 minutes were – all I listened to). I’m sure my wife will like it since she likes a lot of what Jeanie has to say, but after 15 minutes I discovered it wasn’t a message that was meant for me, so I skipped the rest of it.

So there it is. Again, if you haven’t heard these, get a copy at the church bookstore. You’ll be blessed by it.

Rick Renner Coming to Res Life

If you’ve never heard Rick Renner speak, you’re missing something. If you have, you know how great he is. Whichever category you fall into, you won’t want to miss him at Res the weekend of February 26 and 27. If you can’t make those dates (or you want to see him a couple times), he’ll be speaking at the Newaygo Res Life church on February 23.

Rick is a wonderful man of God who pastors the Moscow Good News Church – one of the biggest, if not the biggest, charismatic churches in Russia. He’s a language expert (wait until you hear him talk about the meanings of Greek and Hebrew words in the Bible – he brings so much meaning to them!), has written a compelling devotional called “Sparkling Gems from the Greek” (a book my wife has read every day for two years now) and was named one of the 1000 most influential people in Russia this past year. For more information on Rick, check out his website or the online version of his magazine.

I’ve seen Rick speak several times and I always leave challenged, encouraged, and blessed. And, oh yes, entertained. (He’s very funny and has some of the most hilarious stories.) Please do yourself a favor and take the time to see Rick while he’s here in town. Even better, bring a friend with you. And don’t forget that we at Res usually take an offering for visiting speakers. Pray in advance about what God would have you sow into Rick’s ministry. It’s very good soil that will reap a harvest for you!

Michael Gungor Up for Dove Award

Check this out: our own Michael Gungor is up for a Dove Award! And not any award, but for Song of the Year (for "Friend of God")! I was in the Christian music industry for five years and have been to the Dove Awards at least that many times, and I can tell you that this is THE category to be in and win. It's the "big" category of the night. Check out the details at http://www.gmamusicawards.com/categories/.

The bad news is that there's some pretty stiff competition (including Michael W. Smith, a perennial favorite). The good news is that Israel Houghton is up for male vocalist of the year, so if he gets "hot", maybe the votes will translate to "Friend of God" (Israel is the co-writer of the song). Whatever happens, it's a huge honor to be nominated. And just think, we at Res were among the first ones (if not the first) to be singing this song. Cool!

January Results Reported – 468 Salvations!

For those of you who may have missed it, the monthly report on the ministry’s financials and results were given at last weekend’s services. Here’s a summary (results are for the month of January):

-- 468 decisions for Christ (Praise God!)
-- Over $161,000 given to missions
-- The new building is now 40% completed

Regarding the new building, if you haven’t looked lately, it’s really going up fast – much faster than I imagined it would. It’s amazing that a structure that large is being built so quickly.

On another building-related note, our family is trying to front-load our Build the Vision commitment. In other words, instead of spacing out the commitment over 36 equal months, we’re trying to send in as much as we can as soon as we can. I’ve been part of other church campaigns, and I know that if a lot of us do this, it will allow the church more flexibility in financing as well as allow the church to pay off more of the building sooner. I recommend you consider joining us in “front-loading” your pledge.

Res Life in Grand Rapids Press

Just in case you missed it, Res was covered in Saturday’s Grand Rapids Press as part of an article on mega churches in the area. I don’t know how long they’ll keep the link alive, but you can read about it online at the Press’s website or see below – I’ve reprinted the text.

As usual, the story had a somewhat critical tone (or at least I saw it that way). I’ve found that the Press’s “religion” section often has articles written from people who learned about “religion” in a classroom (probably a journalism classroom), not as part of a personal relationship with Christ. But now I’m being critical. Anyway, here’s the article, which is generally “ok”, though I felt they were certainly looking for the negative within the silver lining.

DO MEGA-CHURCHES BRING THOUSANDS TO GOD, OR LET WORSHIPERS GET LOST IN A CROWD?

Saturday, February 12, 2005
By Matt Vande Bunte
The Grand Rapids Press

Jeanne Hannuksela spends her Sunday mornings gathered with fellow worshippers in a former shopping mall. She wants to spend the rest of the week in church.

Say that again? The Grand Rapids woman comes to Mars Hill Bible Church because of the powerful pastoral teaching. But she is looking to hook up with a "house church" because it is easier to develop authentic Christian relationships among 10 people than 10,000.

"We believe true community happens in smaller settings," said Hannuksela, a community life ministries assistant at the church. "My main community, my main church family, would be the smaller group."

The issue is immensity versus intimacy: The mega-church positions congregations like Mars Hill to define the future of Christianity, while the lack of small-group interaction threatens to erode their influence.

That's what a class of Calvin College students concluded after researching "The Mega-church" and getting first-hand experience at three local congregations: Mars Hill, Resurrection Life Church and Calvary Church.

Compared to the average U.S. church of 75 people, these mega-churches have the capacity to change the world, students said. Yet, their sheer size runs the risk of effecting little change in the lives of their participants.

"The challenge is you can get lost in the crowd," said Kevin Dougherty, a sociology professor who taught the three-week course. "There is a huge disconnect between coming for the (Sunday) performance -- the show -- and being made into a disciple for Jesus Christ."

Small-group setting

Mega-churches are trying to compensate, whether it is with "affinity groups" at Calvary, "life groups" at Resurrection Life or "house churches" at Mars Hill.

Mars Hill, which worships in the former Grand Village Mall, is in the process of restructuring its community life division to focus on house churches, intergenerational groups of people connected spiritually and geographically.

"We don't want it to be just a Bible study," Hannuksela said. "We're looking to have our house churches be more of a family -- people living life together on a daily basis."
Still, students reported only about 20 percent of the congregation at Mars Hill is part of one of the 200 small groups.

At Calvary, the lobby offers 11 information booths containing hundreds of pamphlets spelling out more than 200 weekly events from Bible studies to prayer groups to fellowship dinners. Yet students said it can be difficult for newcomers to get involved.

"Making that initial connection is the biggest challenge," said Josh Kaufman, a student from Grand Rapids who studied Calvary.

It is easy to "get lost in the largeness," said Idalee Content, director of congregational life ministries at Calvary.

That is why the church for years has sponsored a hodgepodge of small groups designed to connect people in similar situations, such as support groups for women.

That concept now is evolving at Calvary's new East Campus, where the small-group focus is shifting from "spiritual information" to "spiritual formation." The church is helping to start small groups structured less by shared affinity than by an intentional grouping of members in geographic zones, with a stated purpose "to do life together."

"We want the East Campus ethos to be community-driven," Content said. "(The small groups are) more than just about learning something. The community itself is highly valued.
"We're helping our members take ownership in what it means to be a follower of Jesus. It's really not about just coming to church on Sunday morning."

Sunday-morning service

But it's Sunday morning that attracts 6,000 people to Calvary, nearly 8,000 to Resurrection Life and 10,000 to Mars Hill. Dougherty points to mega-church pastors as the main attraction, and research gives the theory merit.

A survey by the Hartford Institute for Religion Research shows 70 percent of churches with at least 2,000 participants boomed into a mega-church during the tenure of their current pastor. That's because those pastors "have their fingers on the pulse of the culture and are able to put together a product that people understand," Dougherty said.

The model fits at the three local mega-churches, which all have thrived under dynamic pastors: the Rev. Ed Dobson, at Calvary; the Rev. Duane Vander Klok, at Resurrection Life; and the Rev. Rob Bell, at Mars Hill.

While only two-thirds of senior pastors have seminary training, Dougherty suggests all of them "are highly entrepreneurial individuals."

As a result, mega-churches resemble "complex corporations" in the way they operate. And their growth attracts more growth, to a point where "their reach is comparable to small denominations," Dougherty said.

"People want to associate with a winner," he said. "These churches are winners."

But are there too many people riding the bench in championship churches? Students wondered if those players will stay on the team when a coaching change occurs.

"Mars Hill has only known one pastor," said Ashley Considine, a student from Waterford. "What will happen to the congregation when Rob Bell steps down?"

Students said it is easy to slip in and out of Sunday morning services without getting noticed, and that anonymity may be part of the mega-church attraction. But it's a constant challenge for mega-church leaders, said the Rev. David Christian, associate pastor at Resurrection Life.
As many as 2,500 people play supportive roles from nursery helpers to parking lot attendants on Sunday mornings at Resurrection Life. On the other hand, "there's people in the pews that don't even know anybody," Christian said.

Bigger opportunities

That's where "life groups" come in. About 300 people take part in the small groups that center around everything from rubber stamping to archery to martial arts. Other groups study Scripture, and some focus on outreach projects, such as making quilts for needy families.
Resurrection Life this fall aims to give the life groups more structure and pastoral oversight in hopes of getting more people involved.

"We want to connect the body to the body," Christian said. "It's the only way I know of to make a big church feel small.

"Most people are hungry for what is being called 'authentic relationship,' where people are themselves. It's an inherent human need ... to be part of a small community."

Of course, sometimes big is better -- as in financial and human resources. That's where students said mega-churches can have an impact in ways that smaller congregations don't have a prayer.
The average annual mega-church income is $4.8 million, according to the Hartford study. That kind of revenue helped Mars Hill make a $100,000 grant -- and offer another $150,000 in contributions -- in the weeks following the South Asian tsunami.

"Resources are a big plus," said Jeff Dekker, a student from Hawthorne, N.J., who studied Resurrection Life, where a handful of video cameras run during services.

"If you have the resources, you can expand on your ministry. (Mega-churches) have the resources. Their sermons are global."

But, asked Michael Liechty, a student from Kendallville, Ind., who studied Mars Hill, "If you added up smaller churches into one mega-church, would it be comparable?"

On the flip side, can mega-churches replicate the level of intimacy at smaller churches by breaking down into little groups?

"Mars Hill is a gathering place of a lot of house churches," Hannuksela said.

© 2005 Grand Rapids Press. It's a great time to meet and fellowship (can you say "contacts"?) with other business people as well as hear a great message. For me, it's just cool to be in the room with a bunch of other business people who love Christ -- just a great feeling in the air. For more information or to make a reservation, contact Deb Aylworth at 534-4923 ext. 3711 or at deba@reslife.org.

If you can't attend this time, look for it next month -- it's always noted in the bulletin and on the video announcements. I believe it's every second Tuesday of every month.

Michael Gungor's Website and Blog

For those of you who don't know, Michael Gungor has a website. It’s a personal site (not sanctioned – or even known about as of this posting – by the church) and is meant to communicate information to people interested in the church (like members, attenders, extended family members, past attenders who still want to keep in touch, people away from home (like college students) who want to stay up-to-date, those checking out Res) as well as serve as a forum for discussion on a variety of topics.

In order to be successful, this blog will need input and comments from a wide range of people. It’s impossible for one person to know everything that goes on in a church this big, so we’ll all need to add our two cents to make sure this site is as valuable as possible.

While this site is meant to generate and facilitate discussion, I’ll admit that most of my comments will be overwhelmingly positive. I know a lot about what goes on at the church as well as the hearts of the leaders there, and as such I know that Res is really trying to impact the world for Christ (and having a lot of success doing so!). I am excited to be a part of this great church.

Blessings to you as you become a part of this blog.
